The keel-like design of Beosound Theatre reflects the effortless elegance of a sailing boat, creating the illusion of resting upon a single blade of aluminum—a fluid form floating in mid-air.

This visual feat was artfully achieved through the world-renowned aluminum expertise of Factory 5 in Struer, Denmark. The central extruded aluminum profile is meticulously polished and anodized, then fitted with curved end caps. These components are precision-engineered to ensure the curved edges blend seamlessly with the soundbar’s flat profile, resulting in one continuous, unified piece.

The solid oak lamella cover is crafted in a family-owned workshop in Denmark and is designed to perfectly complement Bang & Olufsen’s Beolab speakers, such as the Beolab 8 , Beolab 28 , and Beolab 50. By clipping the lamellas into place rather than using glue, they can be easily removed or replaced, ensuring the design remains as flexible as it is beautiful. For those seeking a different aesthetic, the fabric version offers a visually softer alternative that blends seamlessly into any interior decor.

The Beosound Theatre features 12 speaker drivers, including two custom-made 6.5-inch long-throw woofers, and an amplifier power of 800 watts* that generates a sound pressure level of up to 112 dB for a powerful and intense cinematic experience. Speech clarity is ensured by the custom-designed center channel, where the tweeter is mounted directly in front of the midrange driver. The alignment of these drivers ensures superior sound distribution, providing a high-quality experience for everyone in the room, while the dispersion pattern has been specifically engineered to optimize vocal quality.

Building on the Beam Width and Beam Direction Control developed for the flagship Beolab 90 speakers, the Beosound Theatre offers a groundbreaking three-dimensional sound dispersion. This is achieved through a patent-pending combination of direct, side-firing, and up-firing speakers. This means all drivers work in unison—not just to produce sound, but to precisely control its width and direction.

"We originally developed Beam Width and Beam Direction Control for the Beolab 90 to reduce the effect of side wall reflections at the listening position. Essentially, to make the walls disappear. In the Beosound Theatre, we use this technology to direct sound away from the listener, which increases the perception of space and allows for a much more immersive experience," explains Jakob Dyreby, Senior Technology Specialist.

The Stereo Soundstage Misconception: Despite integrated 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos decoding and sophisticated acoustic processing, the soundbar’s physical width remains 122 cm. By virtue of its compact design, it cannot single-handedly replace the wide, classic stereo triangle achieved by two well-spaced floorstanding loudspeakers.

Subwoofer Offloading: In practice, introducing an external subwoofer acts as a hidden performance booster. Beyond simply delivering deeper bass, it significantly relieves the soundbar's acoustic drivers—unearthing entirely new, pristine soundscapes across the mid- and high-frequency spectrum.

Defining "Modularity": While marketing promises future-proofing, real-world execution lives in the details. Upgrading from a 55-inch to a 77-inch display does not require replacing the soundbar itself; however, it necessitates new physical aluminum side wings and matching, generation-specific Screen Mount Interfaces. Modular translates to ultimate flexibility, but not without investment.

Digital Powerlink & Chameleon Speakers: Through Digital Powerlink, modern B&O speakers—such as the Beosound Balance—can be seamlessly configured as physical surround channels. Upon assignment, they automatically disappear as standalone room speakers from the app, merging invisibly and in absolute synchronization into the Theatre’s home cinema setup.

Only to a certain extent. While the Beosound Theatre delivers exceptional sound and state-of-the-art acoustic processing, its physical width is 122 cm. You cannot achieve the expansive spatial stereo soundstage of a true stereo triangle on its own. For audiophile stereo enjoyment, we recommend expanding the Theatre with dedicated front speakers (such as the Beolab 28) via (Digital) Powerlink.

This is a masterstroke of B&O software engineering: as soon as modern speakers like the Beosound Balance are integrated into the Theatre setup via Digital Powerlink as surround expansions, they no longer appear as separate music zones in the app. They seamlessly align under the Theatre and act exclusively as part of the home cinema system.

This is where the true "magic" of its programming shines through. The app allows you to create dedicated "Sound Groups." For instance, selecting the "Dining" position turns the motorized floor stand or wall bracket—and the Theatre with it—precisely toward the dining table. Recognizing the increased listening distance from the stored profile, the system automatically adjusts acoustic delay times and parameters to suit the new position perfectly.

The Beosound Theatre refers strictly to the standalone soundbar from Bang & Olufsen. The Beovision Theatre, on the other hand, is the complete high-end TV solution. Here, the soundbar is combined with a compatible OLED TV (e.g., from LG) using specialized Screen Mount Interfaces—and optionally a motorized floor stand or wall bracket—forming a seamless aesthetic and functional unit.

Yes, that is one of the key benefits of its modular design. If you upgrade, for instance, from a 55-inch to a 77-inch display, the soundbar itself remains unchanged. You simply acquire new aluminum side wings matching the new screen width and the appropriate Screen Mount Interface for the new display generation. The soundbar effortlessly evolves alongside your needs.

Thanks to its 12 custom drivers—which direct sound upward and sideways—the Theatre creates a remarkably wide and three-dimensional soundstage on its own, far surpassing conventional soundbars. However, for a truly uncompromising cinematic surround experience with precisely localized rear effects, we recommend adding dedicated rear speakers (such as the Beolab 8) and powerful front partners (such as the Beolab 28).

Do not rely solely on automated microphone calibration. In an expert setup, we manually adjust crossover frequencies to pass low frequencies to the Beolab 28 early on. Because these speakers feature high-performance subwoofers in their bases, the Theatre is acoustically relieved, allowing it to perform with even greater clarity, detail, and precision across the center and surround channels.
